Greg Letiecq (Help Save Manassas President): "If you're here illegally you should be in fear of being prosecuted for it and you should be in fear of being deported, just like a child molester who is not an illegal alien should be in fear of the police department finally knocking on his door and arresting him."
A few comments. First, how do we get from the controversial issue of illegal immigration to the undisputedly heinous crime of child molestation? I'm baffled.
Second, how does the language cited above relate to Jesus' words in Matthew 25:
25:40"The King will answer them, 'Most assuredly I tell you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.' 25:41Then he will say also to those on the left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels; 25:42for I was hungry, and you didn't give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; 25:43I was a stranger, and you didn't take me in; naked, and you didn't clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didn't visit me.'25:44"Then they will also answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn't help you?'
25:45"Then he will answer them, saying, 'Most assuredly I tell you, inasmuch as you didn't do it to one of the least of these, you didn't do it to me.' 25:46These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
Third, I wonder if Greg Letiecq is Catholic. Here's what the Catholic Church has to say about illegal immigration ("Welcome the Stranger Among Us"):
WE ADVOCATE for just policies that respect the human rights of immigrants and preserve the unity of the immigrant family, including due process rights, fair naturalization procedures, and legalization opportunities. We
advocate for generous refugee policies that provide protection for those fleeing persecution.WE ENCOURAGE the extension of social services, citizenship classes, and community organizing efforts that secure improved housing conditions, decent wages, better medical attention, and enhanced educational opportunities for immigrants, migrants, and refugees.
WE OPPOSE efforts to stem migration that do not effectively address its root causes and that permit the continuation of the political, social,
and economic inequities that contribute to it.
Finally, I hear that Greg Letiecq talks about how his anti-immigrant movement is all about "love." I think Doug in Mount Vernon has an interesting response to that. Also, see HokieAnnie for some interesting thoughts on this subject.
Greg Letiecq, sheepherder.
Illegal immigrants are criminals
Child molesters are criminals
The good Samaritan had compassion (=love for) the victim of crime found on the road, not for the ones who committed the crime (=criminals).
The Catholic Church is comprised of hundreds of thousands of Clergy, only 800 of which are citizens of the Vatican City, the purpose of which is to provide sovereignty to the bureaucracy of the world's largest organized religion.
Many if not most of those hundreds of thousands of clergy, along with millions and millions of lay Catholics devote their lives to helping the less fortunate, in the underdeveloped and advanced worlds alike. These are not people following the example of greedy politicians or even common citizens like you or me. They are following the example of Jesus Christ, who blessed the lepers and dined with prostitutes and tax collectors.
You speak of no need for compassion for criminals. This is no Christianity of mine.
Would a good Christian forgive a child molestor?
No question, yes!
Would a good Christian tolerate child molestation?
Of course not.
This lack of toleration for sin and, yes, crime, does not need to translate into hatred and shunning. Rather it should translate into compassion and caring for criminals. We fortunate should love those who do wrong, including the tens of millions of foreigners who, in utmost desperation, came to our country ignoring civil laws. I'm no Saint, but I pledge that I will try to love these millions whom our nation has branded criminals, not just in the name of my own views on immigration, but also in the name of my Lord.
Prince William County has a racism problem.
We also have an affordable housing problem and a crime problem. The racism, lack of affordable housing, and crime are related; and related to the traffic problem (which prevents families from being together after work every day).
None of these problems has anything to do with the immigration of foreign nationals (wether legal or not). The foreign nationals who immigrate to PW County carpool, and they share housing (heck, so does my niece who is not an immigrant). They do jobs Greg and his hate-mongering FUD spreaders would never touch.
We need to embarrass these jackals and run them out of town and make room for fellow human beings who can help us fix our county's problems if we only talk to them a little and try to teach them what we know about living here and learn from them what they know about living together in denser population areas and with more diverse cultures.
Population counts in the county will go up. Nothing will stop that. This so called immigration "problem" is not going away. The scale of human migration happening this century is an order of magnitude greater than was experienced in the 4th century in Europe. We cannot stand in it's way.
Embrace the newcomers and learn to live together, and stop living in fear.
So, what do they have left? Well, they can't use anti-black racism anymore (the old Nixon/Atwater/Reagan "Southern Strategy"). They can't use anti-Semitism, at least not overtly (except for accusing Jews of "Jew baiting"). What they CAN use is anti-immigrant...sorry, anti-"ILLEGAL" immigrant (I'm sure that they are totally clear in their minds about the difference between the two) fearmongering and gay bashing. That's it: 100 years after Teddy Roosevelt, 140 years after Abraham Lincoln, the formerly great Grand Old Party is reduced to immigrant bashing and homophobia.
My only question is this: when will sane Republicans, people of conscience and pride in their conservative beliefs of small but effective government, etc., seize back their party from the hatemongers, bigots and wackos before it destroys itself once and for all in a Götterdämmerung worthy of Wagner?
The racists have already stirred up rational minds to be afraid on this one and they already have the media pinging their choice buzzwords. This is NOT an issue that state or county officials can do anything about, yet it is what the voters are going to be programmed to vote on...
sigh...
