Tricia Stall's true colors on education

Check out this wonderful contrast.  Tricia Stall then ...
Public education today is totally government controlled to socially engineer our society into dumbed down citizenry who will accept and tolerate whatever the government tells them to do.

... and now (from her campaign site):

"Tricia Stall is a steadfast supporter of public education."
And when someone is thinking one thing and saying another, it's not a surprise when they get flustered and blurt out things like "education was started in America so that people can read the Bible" and then conclude with "let's represent the Constitution."  Think I'm kidding?

Yeah, what an advocate for the public education system and the constitutional requirement to keep it separate from religion!  What next?  Telling us how she supports public schools because of their inspiring chapels and friendly priests?

Very telling that a discussion on public schools led Ms. Stall to some how connect teaching the Bible in schools with protecting the Constitution.  We better turn out the vote this year, or wingnuts like this will be in the Senate majority.

What a nutcase (spotter - 8/28/2007 11:10:38 PM)
Tricia Stall is just downright scary.  She must be stopped.

Yet another reason why we need to support John Miller (Shawn - 8/28/2007 11:30:41 PM)
Compare Stall's real position to this from the front page of Democratic candidate John Miller's website:

"My highest priority in this campaign is education. We must do everything we can to ensure all children reach their full potential. The best way to do this is to make sure Virginia has a world-class education system where all children read at grade level and learn in safe, modern classrooms. We must provide adequate resources for education, not pledge to cut off funding for public schools."

John Miller is a great candidate (Lowell - 8/29/2007 6:12:39 AM)
...extremely well qualified and perfect for his district as a former (moderate) Republican who says his "party left him."  Unlike Stall, Miller also has the advantage of being sane. That's always nice in a public official, don't you think?  Ha.

sols and dumbing down of schools (martha - 8/29/2007 5:07:38 AM)
When Allen and Gilmore AND Reagan decided that public education was failing, public school teachers needed to be held accountable and testing ( sol tests) became the tarnished gold standard of accomplishment and success in schools THEN we began to dumb down education.

Teaching to the test has sadly become the mantra in our schools and it isn't the fault of the teachers and children. It's the fault of legislators who have forgotten or never knew anything about what a school should strive for.

you are painting with too broad a brush (teacherken - 8/29/2007 5:41:36 AM)
when you say there is a constitutional requirement to keep schools separate from religion.

Students can pray silently any time they want, as I remind my students they are often prone to do when I spring an unannounced quiz upon them.

They can "gather at the flagpole" before school hours and the can say grace over their food in the lunchroom.

Schools can teach ABOUT religion, as I did in world history (which is almost incomprehensible without understanding the role of religion) and in a separate course on Comparative Religion.

Schools may not instruct in religion, nor my school endorse religion over non-religion, or favor any religion.  But students are not bound the same way.  There is also a body of court decisions which address issues like a student choosing to write about the Bible if asked to write about a favorite book, or a student in a valedictory address referring to the role Jesus or Buddha played in her success.

You have to make a distinction between what the school and its employees cannot do as agents of the state and what students who are required to attend under state law are allowed to do as individuals.

This is exactly what Stall wants. (Lowell - 8/29/2007 6:14:11 AM)
"instruct in religion," "endorse religion over non-religion, or favor any religion."

thanks... (Rob - 8/29/2007 9:24:09 AM)
I knew of the case law that allows for that (like the UVa Supreme Court case), but I figured people knew what I meant given the context of Stall's statements.  Thanks for the clarification.

stalls children (lgb30856 - 8/29/2007 7:39:54 AM)
were both given a public education in newport news schools.
she was involved in PTA and was a member of the Family Life Education Advisory Committee for the School Board.
What happened along the way?
She took advantage of the free education and now disses it.

It's True (legacyofmarshall - 8/29/2007 11:28:42 AM)
Virginia's first school, the College of William and Mary, was founded to teach and preach the Bible.

That changed quick enough, and if John Marshall, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington had been spoon-fed by the Church of England, oh, woops, we might not have a country.

stall's resume needs to be checked,,, (lgb30856 - 8/29/2007 2:22:20 PM)
she padded it last time and was found out. what has she done for her community except she is against taxes?
I don't see much she has done, have you?

I see no contradiction here. (J_e_f_f - 8/29/2007 6:11:50 PM)
Tricia Stall is a steadfast supporter of public education

... because ...

public education today is totally government controlled to socially engineer our society into dumbed down citizenry who will accept and tolerate whatever the government tells them to do.

It's a Republican's dream.
