Dave Englin 2.0 (Thankfully No Change from 1.0)

This if from the letters section of this week's Alexandria Times.  Dave still appreciates that the purpose of government is not just to serve corporate interests.  Ironically, neither I nor any of my "liberal" friends asks for or expect anything from our government - it's the "limited government" types who ask for a large military, ineffective and bloated federal departments like Homeland Security, and no-bid contracts for corperations - all at taxpayer expense.

Though I am not too worried about another victory for Dave, his Democrat-turned-Republican, Chamber of Commerce supported opponent is well-financed, so you may want to consider giving a dollar or two to Dave's re-election campaign.  Here's why:

[From the Alexandria Times]
Delegate responds to criticism
I appreciate the concern Art Fox expressed in his recent letter about a low rating given to me by one group primarily comprised of lobbyists for large corporations. The rating was based on an anonymous survey of lobbyists for companies including the likes of  tobacco giant Phillip Morris and the Mirant Corporation. This rating comes as no surprise considering that I am one of the chief advocates in the General Assembly of smoke-free restaurant legislation, and that I continue to fight the Mirant Corporation power plant that is poisoning our community's air.

As long as I serve the 45th District, I will always put the interests of the people I represent ahead of the interests of these large corporations. That's why so far I have been endorsed for re-election by the Virginia League of Conservation Voters, the AFL-CIO, the Virginia Education Association, and the Sierra Club.

However, I have also championed measures that would directly assist the small businesses that contribute to the fabric of our community. For example, I co-sponsored a successful bill allowing the creation of health insurance cooperatives to reduce health care costs for small businesses; I have proposed legislation that, among other things, would dramatically reduce the real estate tax burden for many small businesses; and I helped create the Energy Star sales tax holiday that will help businesses, consumers, and the environment beginning this October.

My Republican opponent, Mark Allen, likely will continue attacking me based on this one group's rating. However, if I am re-elected this November, the people of 45th District can count on me to continue to put their interests first, even if it means I will score poorly on an anonymous survey of corporate lobbyists.

David Englin
State Delegate, 45th District
