Republicans Statewide Thwarted in Attempts to Erase RecordsIn this election year, Republicans candidates from Virginia Beach to Fairfax have found themselves on the wrong side of Virginia voters. But instead of dropping their views and aligning with the mainstream, many of them are trying to erase, edit, flip-flop and spin away their inconvenient pasts.
Thank goodness for Google!
This year voters and the press don't have to take the word of candidates' running for office. For every pledge made in a piece of mail or promise made in a campaign speech, the truth is archived online.
Below are some of the best examples of Republican candidates caught red-handed trying to erase their real records.
# 1 Tricia Stall - Senate District One
Caught Trying to Hide Real Position on Education
Tricia Stall made waves during the primary season for signing a pledge in favor of ending government involvement in education. Apparently, that position isn't polling well in her general election match-up, as she's recently altered her website with a claim that she will "never" de-fund public schools.
Keen online observes have noticed Stall has gone even further and changed comments she left on an Internet bulletin board. Her statement to the Alliance for the Separation of School & State that "Public education today is totally government controlled to socially engineer our society into dumbed down citizenry who will accept and tolerate whatever the government tells them to do" has completely disappeared.
Why the website updates, candidate Stall? What is it you are trying to hide?
# 2 Dave Hunt - District 24Caught Turning His "Five Point" Transportation Plan Into a "Four Point" Plan
Earlier this year, candidate Dave Hunt sent out a mailer proclaiming his "Five Point" transportation plan. This plan included point number two - "[increasing] penalties for dangerous and chronically bad drivers..."
Now, in more recent mailings, candidate Hunt has sent mailers turning his five point plan into a four point plan.
Guess which point he had dropped?
# 3 Marc Cadin - 67th District
Caught Removing Support for Transportation from His Website
As late as June 28th, 2007, candidate Marc Cadin had plastered his support for the 2007 Transportation Act all over his website. But as the summer grew hotter and the opposition to abusive driver fees grew louder, Cadin removed all mentions of the plan.
Where he once "applaud[ed] the Republican General Assembly's passage" of the bill, there is now only silence.
Cadin has even launched a hypocritical attack on Del. Chuck Caputo, while conveniently omitting his own wishy-washy views.
# 4 - Jeannemarie Devolites Davis - 34th Senate District
Caught Embellishing Her Clout on the Transportation
In her campaign mailings this year, Jeannemarie Devolites Davis has been quick to point out that she is the only state senator with a seat on the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, the board that determines taxation and funding for all regional transportation projects.
What Jeannemarie doesn't tell her constituents is she has only bothered to show up for meetings about half the time!
Minutes of all meetings can be viewed at thinkoutsidethecar.org (NVTC) and thenovaauthority.org (NVTA).
#5 - Bill Howell - Speaker
Caught Trying to Re-Write History
Speaker Bill Howell's office has released statements passing the blame to everyone but Republicans about how abusive driving fees don't apply to out-of-state drivers The only problem for Republicans is that they previously handed all the credit to their own Dave Albo, then shifted the blame when the going got rough.
Give them a hand, Governor Kaine, and they'll bite it off.
Next session will convene with a Democratic Senate and a friendlier House of Delegates, and Bill Howell will probably lose his post as speaker, and maybe just maybe some of the Republicans who just barely made it through this year's election will be scared enough to support a *real* transportation plan that doesn't tax through crimes and provides a permanent, stable source of revenue.
